Our Progress so far.

We thought it would be best to all sit down and talk about what we want to do.  We all really like the idea of physical theatre and a film after watching videos of DV8, so we were talking about how we can put the two together. Eventually we thought of the idea of asking the public for stories, we could use the stories we get and film the place where the story takes place and incorporate physical theatre to tell the story. We thought we could also film our public interactions as a kind of video dairy and create a short interesting film. After watching a video in lesson that involved a time lapse we thougt it would be nice to have something to show as we progress. We had an idea on using a canvas and postcards so everytime we got a new story we could ask the storyteller to sign a post card and add it to the canvas. This idea is just for something the audience that will be watching the film to look at something interesting and to show our progress.

A few group meetings have taken place and what we have managed to do so far is decide on the design of the postcard we will be giving out to public, which was designed by Cassie Watson Webdale. We have also bought the canvas and the card and hired out a camera from the media building, now we are set. What we have found difficult so far is finding a day when we are all free and able to start filming, but nonetheless we plan to start filming this week and have something to show by our next lesson on Monday the fifth of May.

What we have decided to do.

A group meeting in the Tower Bar got us talking about what we could do. We all decided we would like to do something with film and photography and Francesca Brooks said she would like to do some physical movement after researching DV8. Our idea is to make a big white canvas that we could move around Lincoln and hand out small post card sized cards and ask people if they could write a word or draw a picture of what Lincoln means to them. After they have designed a card we would take a picture of their card and them and stick it to the canvas eventually creating a eye pleasing collage of photos of what the public think of their city. We would film the process and show the film in a public venue when it is in near completion. Our goal is to make people think of Lincoln in a diffrent way, we hope after looking at the canvas and creating their own card they start to think about what a truly wonderful place Lincoln is.

DV8 Physcical Theatre company is one of our major influences for our performance, so I thought it would be a very good idea to learn more about them to understand them as a company. The first paragraph on their website says a lot and it is exactly what we want to achieve “DV8 Physical Theatre’s work is about taking risks, aesthetically and physically, about breaking down the barriers between dance and theatre and, above all, communicating ideas and feelings clearly and unpretentiously. It is determined to be radical yet accessible, and to take its work to as wide an audience as possible.” (http://www.dv8.co.uk/about_dv8/artistic_policy, no date) We want to clearly communicate the stories we are given accurately through the use of physical theatre. We also want to appeal to all ages so that we make a piece that a wide range of people can enjoy.

What I would like to do.

Thinking about what I would like to do in our Site Specific performance, I would like to do something that involves filming seeing as I did Media Studies at GCSE it has become a lost hobby of mine and I would like to revive my passion for filming. If we do a film rather than a live performance we could perform in more than one place and create a narrative using the camera. I am also a lover of sketch shows and would like to try to see if I could pull one off my self.

A walk around Lincoln.

We got given a task in lesson to walk somewhere in Lincoln and come back a different way while documenting our journey. The idea was to notice things that we would not normally notice, such as things on the floor or architecture that has been right infront of us the whole time if only we spared the time to look. This idea of noticing the unnoticed could be an idea for our Site Speciffic, by making a piece of drama that would make people aware of some of the beautiful architecture that surrounds Lincoln would be an accomplishment. Without relising until we were walking vertically up Steep Hill we were walking to the catherdral. On our travels we took photographs and voice recordings when anything of interest happened, for example we found a bottle of weed killer in the middle of no-where and we also got stopped by the train line going there and back. It is the little things like this we documented. While on our journey we were on the look out for a potential site for our final performance.

Our journey started from Studio 2 in the LPAC, up to the cathedral and back down the hill. On Our journey we all noticed how the city seemed to change the moment we started to walk up Steep Hill. The city starts to feel like you are going back through the ages because of the buildings that surround Steep Hill obviously have been there for quite sometime. One of the building that caught our eye is Jews Court a building with so much horrific history that has now been transformed in to a bookshop. The atmosphere started to change the moment we went through the doors of the cathedral, we noted that we all became quite and reserved while in the cathedral and appreciated our surroundings with thoughts rather than speech. Upon exiting the catherdral and walking back a different way a bottle of ‘Weedol Max Weed Killer’ caught our eye on a stone ledge with no one around, we started to guess how it got there and why it was there when no plants or grass was around. Our walk then took us to the Lincoln Gallery where we only stayed a short while before moving on to Danesgate and then back to our starting point. The walk got me thinking about how Lincoln goes from old to new only by walking up Steep Hill and whether we could incorporate that into our Site Specific performance.

As we have not yet decided for defiant and still very open to what we want to accomplish in our final peformance, we took the chance we had today to get some ideas and talk about what each of us would like to do. We had ideas ranging from a sketch show to physical theatre. We all liked the idea though to incorporate film and physical theatre together. We are still unsure what to do with this decision but it is starting to look like a very promising piece of drama.
